How to Care for Hand-Block Printed Cotton
Share
Hand-block printed cotton is a labour of love each piece is stamped by hand using carved wooden blocks dipped in natural dyes. Caring for it properly ensures the colours stay vibrant and the fabric remains soft wash after wash.
1. Wash in Cold Water
Always use cold or lukewarm water (below 30°C). Hot water can cause natural dyes to bleed and may shrink the fabric. Hand-washing is ideal, but a gentle machine cycle works too.
2. Use Mild Detergent
Choose a pH-neutral or mild liquid detergent. Avoid harsh chemicals, bleach, or fabric softeners - these strip natural dyes and weaken cotton fibres over time.
3. Wash Dark and Light Colours Separately
For the first few washes, colours may run slightly this is completely normal for naturally dyed fabric. Wash dark-coloured pieces separately until the colour sets.
4. Do Not Wring or Twist
Gently squeeze out excess water without twisting. Wringing distorts the print and stretches the fabric out of shape.
5. Dry in Shade
Hang your garments inside out in a shaded, well-ventilated area. Direct sunlight fades natural dyes faster than anything else.
6. Iron on Reverse Side
Use a medium iron on the reverse side of the fabric to protect the printed surface. A damp cloth between the iron and fabric adds extra protection.
7. Store with Care
Fold and store in a cool, dry place. Avoid plastic bags cotton needs to breathe. Cedar blocks or neem leaves are great natural alternatives to mothballs.
